Dubai’s Next Big Move in Mobility: Autonomous Pods Set to Redefine City Travel

Where innovation meets everyday travel as Dubai introduces a people focused autonomous transport system

Dubai is once again pushing the boundaries of urban innovation. This time, the city is reimagining how people move between neighborhoods, landmarks, and transport hubs with the introduction of the Glydways autonomous transport system. Designed to be smart, efficient, and people focused, this new mode of travel promises to ease congestion and make daily journeys smoother for residents and visitors alike.

Announced by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority at the World Governments Summit, Glydways reflects the city’s ongoing commitment to building a future where mobility is seamless, sustainable, and powered by technology.

What Is the Glydways System and Why It Matters

Glydways is a network of small electric autonomous pods that travel along dedicated pathways. These pods are not traditional buses or trains. They are compact vehicles designed to move quietly and efficiently, carrying a small group of passengers directly to their destination.

Each pod can accommodate four to six people and operates on demand. Instead of waiting for fixed schedules, passengers can request a ride when they need it, much like booking a ride through a mobile app. This approach makes travel more personal and flexible, especially for short city trips.

What truly sets Glydways apart is its capacity. Despite using narrow guideways that are roughly the width of a bike lane, the system can move more than ten thousand passengers per hour in each direction. This level of efficiency places it on par with large scale rail systems, but with far lower construction and operating costs.

Designed for a Smoother Daily Commute

One of the biggest frustrations for commuters in any major city is traffic. Glydways addresses this problem directly by operating on dedicated routes that are separate from regular road traffic. These pathways can be built above ground, below ground, or alongside existing roads, allowing the system to blend into the city without major disruption.

Because the pods do not mix with cars, travel times become predictable and uninterrupted. Passengers can expect a calm, smooth ride that takes them straight from point A to point B without unnecessary stops.

The system is fully electric, which also supports Dubai’s sustainability goals by reducing emissions and lowering reliance on private vehicles.

First Routes Across Key Dubai Locations

Dubai plans to introduce Glydways through a set of initial routes that connect metro stations with popular destinations and busy districts. These routes are designed to solve one of the most common transport challenges in the city, which is the first and last mile connection.

Planned routes include connections between metro stations and areas such as Bluewaters Island, Madinat Jumeirah, Alserkal Avenue, Times Square Centre, and Dubai Festival City. The Bluewaters route is expected to serve as a pilot, allowing authorities to test the system and fine tune operations before expanding further.

By linking residential, cultural, and commercial areas directly to the metro, Glydways could significantly reduce the need for short car trips, which are often a major source of congestion.

A More Human Way to Move Around the City

Beyond technology and numbers, the real appeal of Glydways lies in how it changes the everyday experience of moving around Dubai. The pods are designed to be quiet, comfortable, and easy to use. Payments will integrate with the existing Nol system, ensuring that passengers do not need to learn something new to get started.

This focus on convenience makes the system especially attractive for families, tourists, and daily commuters who value time and comfort.

Part of a Bigger Vision for Dubai

Glydways is not a standalone project. It forms part of a broader transformation of Dubai’s transport network, which also includes ambitious initiatives such as the Dubai Loop, an underground high speed transit concept aimed at connecting major hotspots across the city.

Together, these projects highlight Dubai’s determination to stay ahead of global cities when it comes to smart mobility. The goal is clear: reduce traffic, shorten travel times, and create a transport system that keeps pace with the city’s rapid growth.

As Glydways moves from announcement to reality, it signals a future where getting around Dubai is not just faster, but also calmer, cleaner, and more human centered.
