The fourth edition of the Al Marmoom: Film in the Desert Festival has officially begun, bringing a vibrant celebration of creativity, culture, and cinema to the Al Marmoom Desert Reserve. The festival was inaugurated by Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), on January 5, 2025, and will run until January 12 under the theme ‘Where Stories Come to Life.’

A Platform for Global and Local Talent

The festival aims to advance the local film industry by offering an innovative platform for filmmakers, artists, and creatives to showcase their visions and productions to a global audience. Her Highness emphasized Dubai’s exceptional capabilities in attracting leading talent and fostering a creative environment that propels innovation. “Cinema is one of the most powerful expressions of human creativity,” she stated, highlighting its unique ability to blend technical mastery with artistic purpose while preserving cultural heritage and addressing societal challenges.

The festival’s curated selection includes over 80 feature films chosen from 240 submissions, ranging from documentaries and animations to live-action films and those created using artificial intelligence. Key entries are also competing for the Al Marmoom Short-Film Competition awards across four categories.

Immersive Experiences and Workshops

The Immersive Experience Zone is a standout feature of the festival, showcasing digital artwork created with artificial intelligence alongside inspiring murals and installations by renowned artists such as Ghaleb Hawila, Abdullah Lutfi, and Mikhail Antykov. Her Highness toured this zone and commended the diversity of artistic works and the powerful messages conveyed through them.

With more than 30 workshops led by cinema experts and creatives, including four hosted by the College of Arts and Creative Enterprises at Zayed University, the festival inspires young talents to pursue professional careers in cinema and the arts. Panel discussions, seminars, and interactive experiences like ‘Create Your Own AI Movie’ provide attendees with unique opportunities to engage with industry leaders.

Strengthening Cultural and Environmental Engagement

Inspired by the iconic Ghaf tree, the festival strengthens intercultural engagement and raises environmental awareness. Visitors can explore the stunning Al Marmoom Desert, one of Dubai’s key cultural landmarks, through activities such as stargazing in the planetarium, safari bus tours, and a photography competition.
