UAE Exceeds Diabetes Screening Target with Over 150,000 Tests Conducted Nationwide

The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has reached a significant achievement in its diabetes prevention efforts, surpassing its goal of screening 100,000 individuals by conducting over 150,000 tests across the nation. This accomplishment, part of the National Prediabetes and Diabetes Screening Campaign, highlights the country’s dedication to early diagnosis and public health innovation.

A Landmark in Health Screening

Initiated in October 2023 as part of the Government Accelerators programme, the campaign aimed to enhance early detection of type 2 diabetes. By exceeding its target, the UAE demonstrated the effectiveness of well-coordinated public health initiatives.

Key Achievements:

  • Screenings were carried out at health centers, workplaces, and private healthcare facilities.
  • Advanced tools, such as HbA1c testing for high-risk individuals and digital questionnaires, streamlined the process.
  • Integrated services ensured screenings were linked to consultations and follow-up care.

The campaign’s progress was unveiled on World Diabetes Day, November 14, signifying the successful conclusion of its second phase—a collaborative effort supported by UAE health authorities and Merck Gulf.

Integrated Approach to Screening and Awareness

The initiative was designed to raise awareness about diabetes while providing accessible and thorough screening options. Public and private sectors worked together to bring the program to a wide audience, making early detection more attainable for thousands.

  • Digital Support: Online questionnaires facilitated participation and identified individuals at higher risk.
  • Immediate Pathways to Care: Screenings were paired with consultations and treatment options, supplemented by the hotline 800-DIABEAT for remote guidance.

Dr. Amin Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary for Health Regulation at MoHAP, and Dr. Hussein Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health, highlighted the alignment of this initiative with the “We the UAE 2031” vision, which emphasizes health innovation and sustainable well-being.

Celebrations Marking the Achievement

The success was celebrated with symbolic gestures and public events. The Dubai Frame, an iconic landmark, was lit in blue, symbolizing diabetes awareness, while Skydive Dubai hosted celebratory activities to mark the milestone.

Dr. Buthaina Bin Belaila, Head of MoHAP’s Non-Communicable Diseases Department, commended the initiative’s impact. She emphasized its role in enhancing public health awareness and advancing the UAE’s position in global healthcare competitiveness. “The campaign’s success reflects the power of collaboration in achieving national health goals,” she noted.

A Future Driven by Health Innovation

The campaign underscores the UAE’s leadership in health innovation and its commitment to addressing chronic diseases. By uniting public and private sectors, leveraging technology, and promoting preventive care, the UAE has set a strong precedent for addressing other health challenges.

Through the National Prediabetes and Diabetes Screening Campaign, the UAE not only achieved a remarkable milestone but also demonstrated its dedication to building a healthier, more informed society. This initiative reinforces the nation’s commitment to health excellence and its aspiration to be a global model in public health advancements.
