UAE Schools Launch National Measles Campaign with Free MMR Vaccinations

In a proactive step to bolster public health, schools across the UAE have partnered with the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) to launch a National Measles Campaign this November. The initiative aims to protect children from measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) by providing free vaccinations to primary school students.

Targeted Vaccinations for Children

The campaign is designed for children aged one to seven and requires a single dose of the MMR vaccine, a mandatory prerequisite for school and nursery attendance. This effort ensures comprehensive coverage and strengthens immunity among young children.

Typically, the MMR vaccine is administered at 12 and 18 months. However, the DHA has introduced an additional booster dose to enhance immunity. In a circular to schools, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) urged institutions to emphasize the importance of the vaccine and ensure compliance with the recommended schedule.

Specialized Training and Parental Engagement

To facilitate the campaign, school medical staff have received specialized training from the DHA. For instance, Amity School Dubai’s principal, Sangita Chima, highlighted the efforts made to ensure effective implementation. “Our school has worked closely with the DHA to prepare for this campaign, including providing advanced training for our medical team,” she shared.

Schools have also been engaging with parents to maximize participation. Vaccinations are offered both on school premises and at DHA primary healthcare centers, making the process accessible. Chima noted a strong response from parents, with consent forms already pouring in.

Addressing Health Concerns

Medical experts are reminding parents about the importance of vaccination to prevent measles, a highly contagious viral infection. While the UAE has not experienced a significant surge in cases, maintaining high vaccination coverage remains essential.

Dr. Sherif Mohamed Mosaad Kamel, a consultant pediatrician at Zulekha Hospital Dubai, emphasized that widespread immunization is critical to sustaining the UAE’s strong defense against outbreaks. “The MMR vaccine is the most effective preventive measure. Ensuring children receive the two recommended doses helps maintain herd immunity,” he explained.

Symptoms and Prevention

Although measles cases remain low in the UAE, doctors are urging vigilance. The infection can cause symptoms such as fever, runny nose, cough, and a red rash that typically spreads from the face to the rest of the body.

According to Dr. Rain Sim, a pediatric consultant at Canadian Specialist Hospital Dubai, complications from measles, though rare, can occur if the infection spreads to other organs, including the brain. “While there is no cure for measles, vaccination offers the best protection,” he said.

Collaborative Efforts for a Healthier Future

The National Measles Campaign underscores the UAE’s commitment to preventive healthcare and its readiness to address global health challenges. With guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO), this initiative integrates awareness, accessibility, and expert care to ensure children receive vital immunizations.
